The great Peter Marshall's Keeper...

The great Peter Marshall's Keeper of the Springs tells the story of a small town that decided it no longer needed the old man who purified the springs of its daily water supply. In the name of progress and budgetary constraints, City Council voted to release the man of duties, since he was hardly seen and not necessary to the town's work life. A less costly cement reservoir would be built to replace the keeper. Soon the springs became contaminated, filled with life-
threatening dross. People took sick. Delicate machinery needing clean water to drive its engines became clogged with debris and slime. The entire town fell in disarray, and the Council met again to lament its fate. After short discussion, they decided to rehire the keeper because of his value to the well-being of the town. They reasoned that however insignificant his job might appear to some, it was vitally indispensable to the health and prosperity of everyone who lived there. -- Stewart
