The grass which surrounds my house is clear and bright, tender and healthy, thick as a mat. What a joy to behold morning after morning as the local birds flutter around and sing out their anthems. The deer herd is regular and respectful as they take turns nipping at this expanse of beauty and tender taste. But it's not by chance nor by neglect. My experience is that it takes three things. First, my grass must be fed regularly; the nourishment needed by this kind of grass, in this part of the world -- that's what it gets. Also, it must be kept clean; every alien or threatening invader, whether growing, crawling or flying, must be dealt with. The grass must also be kept watered -- just the right amount at the right time. The clock-control connected to my well is helpful. So is the local "ag agent" who is always ready to give good advice. I'm no grass specialist, not really a gardener. But I take the attitude that my grass has its personal commitment to its own health and beauty; and I'm committed to be its best friend. How beautiful to see the healthy green show itself, as if singing out its joy morning after morning. -- Hoornstra
