Graduates of a certain high school assembled for their first class "reunion." Ten years had passed and, as always, friends renewed acquaintances, talked of days gone by, and enjoyed a happy time together. Everyone wore their best clothes -- some had made serious efforts to lose weight, acquire a healthy-looking tan, and to look no worse for the wear.
The same class gathered again for a "twenty-year" reunion. This time, there were some empty chairs. Two members of the class had died, two others were unable to attend because of physical impairments. Those in attendance were beginning to show their age.
The years would take their toll until, at last, the class survived only in the school records.
An unknown author reminds us that the same is true of families: "There are sure to be vacant chairs at the table, new mounds in the graveyard ... but because of Christ we know that for those who love him, every life that ends here is a life begun in the house from whence they no more go out."
John said, "I write this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life." (1 John 5:13)
