The gospels give us intriguing insights into the apostles' lives and character. Imagine
being around Jesus every day and witnessing what the apostles saw -- healings,
exorcisms, water-walking, storm-calming, and dead people coming alive.
The wonder, doubts, and ambitions they expressed tell us how real the apostles were. On the Mount of Transfiguration they saw two famous countrymen who had been dead for centuries. That ancient duo stood talking with Jesus, whose clothes had suddenly begun to dazzle them. Peter reacted in a contemporary fashion. He opined about what was appropriate.
We love to hear "expert" opinions. "Talking heads" dominate radio and television news programs. The Lord didn't much value Peter's thoughts. Instead he pointed Peter, James, and John to Jesus and said, "Listen to him." There may be a need for opinions at times, but nothing equals listening to Jesus. Do you let him advise you through the word or do you waste your time with television and radio talking heads?
