A front page story in Louisville's The Courier Journal contrasts life in the suburbs with life in the inner city. The article reveals few surprises to most of us. Children growing up in the slums are much more likely to die of a drug overdose, be victimized by crime, and receive an inferior education.
We do not have to be a Mother Teresa of Calcutta to look around us and see in our own cities the poor, hungry, hurting, and helpless. Throughout the centuries the Christian Church through its social gospel has reached out to touch the lives of those in need. Each of us can do something positive to make the lives of the less fortunate more hopeful.
How? Why not volunteer for Meals on Wheels, or serve on the board of a local community ministry, or tutor a child in an after-school program? The ways to help are many. Challenge your congregation next Sunday to seek to respond creatively to the poor in your community. When we reach out in love, the Lord will be there to bless us and those we help in God's name.
