A friend of mine tells the story about a schoolmate who wanted to become a doctor when he grew up. His classmates and the teachers would call him Doctor Bill. His high school annual reflected his ambition. Expectations were high as Doctor Bill went off to college. After his sophomore year of college, Bill had to come home and make a confession. The dream of becoming a doctor had given way to another dream. He wanted to become a lawyer. His parents were shocked at first, but reality set in. They supported his wishes and he transferred to a noted university to pursue a law degree. After all, he was a son of whom his mother and father could be proud. Our lesson for today talks about a son of whom the Father was proud. "This is my son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased." Can we even faintly think of what it must have been like to have been the only Begotten Son of God? And the tremendous task of trying to please our Heavenly Father? I want to suggest to you that my friend's schoolmate Doctor Bill probably had a harder time trying to meet the high expectations of many who laid it on him. Why would that be so? Matthew 3:16 provides us with a clue. The Holy Spirit, like a dove, descended upon Jesus. He didn't aspire to be a doctor or a lawyer, though there is nothing wrong with that. He aspired only to please his Father. What would he say pleased his Father in Heaven? A study of the life of Christ reveals him to be compassionate, gentle, meek, forgiving, and loving. Does your heart ever cry out to be like Christ? It ought to be the prayer of our lives -- to please the Father.
