FREE GIFT! splashed in big red letters across the envelope or the computer screen. Ah, something for free! How wonderful! Until we open the envelope or click on the icon and discover that the gift is not really free. Oh, they will not charge us for it, but we have to buy a lengthy subscription or an expensive software program to receive it. It might be a bit of an incentive if one was thinking of subscribing or picking up that software program anyhow, but it certainly is not free. There is a price to pay to receive the "free" item. In our proclamation we often tell people about God's free gift of grace. How do we hear this? Does it almost sound like another advertising come-on? Do we respond, "Sure, it is free for a while, but where is the hook?" or "What do I really have to give to receive this gift?" Is it really too good to be true? Free gift or baited hook? What do you think?
