Fill in the blanks in...

"Fill in the blanks in the sentence: '_________ loved me by _________ ;'"the leader suggested. Then he modeled the exercise for the group: "Walter loved me by affirming me." Walter was the foreman at a tool and die shop in Chicago where he had worked as a boy. "I've been watching you, Ron, and I want you to know that I think you are going to succeed at whatever you do." He didn't think that he would succeed at anything. He was fifteen.
"Next," the leader suggested to the group, "scratch out the name you put in the blank and insert the name 'Jesus.'" They did. They were surprised to see that Christ had used common, ordinary people to witness to them with his love.
"Finally," the leader said, "turn the exercise around. Love someone the way you have received love." That week the leader made it a point to find someone who needed affirming and tell them, "I believe in you," just as Walter had done for him. Since we can give away what we receive, the spiritual exercise on witnessing was very effective.
Why not "fill in the blanks" and then say, "Here I am, Lord, send me."
