Father Gerry was a true believer in the vows he took at his ordination into the priesthood. Obedience and chastity came easily, but poverty became his identity. Every time he was called to another parish, he would give away everything he had: his car, his bed, his furnishings. Everything but his study materials and his clothes. He believed that his new parish members would see to what he needed and furnish it. The members of his second parish bought Father Gerry a new car through a salesman in the congregation. The fourth parish gave him an old car that was hardly reliable in the desert heat. The mechanics knew him very well. But that wasn't the point. Father Gerry always pointed to the scripture text that proclaimed that we all have received the love of Christ freely and we can give that love freely. His pastoral journey included many types of vehicles, many types of people, many types of payment, but through it all, Father Gerry feels he has never wanted for anything. The love of his parish members and the love of Christ have been enough for him.
