On the eve of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, John Adams, one of our nation's founding fathers, wrote a letter to his wife, Abigail. He reflected on the debate in Philadelphia regarding freedom for the American colonies, confident that "the two Countries should be sundered forever." Anticipating the struggle to accomplish this, he added, "It may be the Will of Heaven that America shall suffer Calamities still more wasting, and Distresses yet more dreadful." He did not despair at this prospect, however, for he saw a "good Effect" that would result - namely, to "correct many Errors, Follies, and Vices which threaten to disturb, dishonor and destroy Us." Then, referring to both countries as well as to individuals, he offered this striking image: "The Furnace of Affliction produces Refinement."
