Elaine and her friends knew...

Elaine and her friends knew that her family was strange. Elaine could tell by her friends'
reactions when they played at her house. She also realized, when playing at her
girlfriends' houses, that her family was different. It was religion. All day Sunday, it
seemed, Elaine's family was at church. Wednesday nights, also.
On Sundays and Wednesdays, Elaine missed television shows her friends discussed. Strangest of all, which she told only once and decided never to repeat, her parents punished Elaine by making her read the Bible. She grew to hate the Bible.
In college, Elaine told her roommate her dislike for the Bible. "The Bible isn't there to punish us," Claire said. It's about the trouble God's gone through to love us." The next semester, Elaine signed up for Introduction to the Bible. She knew what the Bible said, now she wanted to find out what it meant.
