Egerton Ryerson at the age of...
Egerton Ryerson at the age of twelve lay in bed, deathly ill. He promised God that if he should live he would dedicate himself to the service of the Lord. Just then his mother entered the room and saw that his face was altered and exclaimed that he would get better, which he did. Ryerson became a Methodist preacher in Canada, but dedicated himself to education. In 1844 he became the Chief Superintendent of Education and revolutionized Canada's educational system. He funded elementary schools and placed a library in every school.
