During a term break, 10 Princeton students went to Philadelphia to live at the St. Francis Inn, a soup kitchen which serves between 400 to 600 meals a day to the homeless. They performed a variety of duties: picking up donations from warehouses, bakeries and shops; working at the thrift shop; and preparing, serving and cleaning up after the meals. The students knew that one week of physical work at the Inn was simply that: one week of physical work at the Inn. The real impact of the week was getting to know people who the Inn served: the very young and very old, those who are vulnerable, in need, and cold. The students listened to the stories of struggle and bad luck: Lisa, a prostitute who wants to get pneumonia so she can go to the hospital and have a place to stay other than a stranger's bed; Ray, who is fighting a drug addiction, mustering the resources he has, grateful for the warm meal; Falon, the ten-year-old girl who loved to draw. Paul prays that Christians deepen their knowledge and understanding so their love might abound more and more, so these students did in the time in Philadelphia.
