Did you ever play house? Dress up in Dad's ragged coat and floppy tie? Or perhaps don one of mom's frayed aprons? Houses are important to each of us. As adults we don't play house, but discipline ourselves to make the buildings we live in warm and accepting beacons of light in a dark world.
Most of us have come to love the places where we live. Lots of homeowners have even given their homes special names. We all know the Roosevelts dubbed their New York estate, Hyde Park. The Kennedys enjoy summers at Hyannis Port, and of course the Reagans live in the White House.
I recently read of a medical doctor who calls his home, Bedside Manor, and there is a report of a Cheese family who have decided to call their abode The Mousetrap. My own mother-in-law has lovingly bestowed the name Harmony House on her suburban dwelling.
Paul wrote to the Colossians regarding the importance of our church body being directed by Jesus Christ. Every church needs to be known in the community as Christ's Church -- a place where people can be loved and challenged by the Gospel; a worshipful sanctuary of caring souls serving no master but the living Lord.
We in Christ's Church are not headless horsemen going hither and yon, but never arriving. We are a pilgrim people attuned to the gospel beat of agape love. Our church has a name; we are the body of Christ who is our sure foundation.
