David was the epitome of a warrior. He had faced the giant Goliath and with skill and perfect timing he defeated a seemingly superior enemy. Overnight David found himself a national hero. But David was very human. He fell on his face more than once and many was the time that he looked like anything but a great king and leader.
Military conquest is not always the measure of a person's character. David was a great military leader, but he was not so great of character. One of the turning points in his life came when he found Saul in the camp sleeping. He could have allowed Abishai to kill him while he slept, but he did not. There is no doubt that David did not trust Saul, but he knew that God had called Saul and so for David, God would be the judge over Saul's future. David saw no repentance on the part of Saul, but he also knew that it was better in serving the Lord to trust in the Lord.
David's loyalty and courage and his faith in God are still standards by which we can learn. We can draw hope from the certain knowledge that although David was a sinner, just as we are sinners, God forgave him and God forgives and loves us.
