A current trend in radio talk shows today encourages the host to put down those with whom he disagrees. If a person calls with an unpopular opinion, the discussion very quickly gets away from the stated topic and turns to name calling. Recently a talk show host offered to break a caller's finger by punching him in the nose. The conversation went down from there. The logic of such comments must stem from the idea that if a host can't win with reason he can win by challenging the character of the caller.
Isaiah, in today's lesson, can be compared with a caller to a talk show. He has an unpopular message to those in the land of Babylonia. He speaks of God's willingness to forgive those who have not always been loyal to the exiled community's beliefs or religious practices. When God frees Israel, all will be welcome to return to the promised land. The response to this message is to put Isaiah down in both words and deeds. Isaiah is personally abused for his saying message of grace just as the radio caller is abused for an unpopular opinion.
