A couple of seasons ago, when Larry Bird was its coach, the Indiana Pacers basketball team was one of the best in the NBA. Sportswriters and analysts agreed that the Pacers were only a year or two away from winning a championship. But then Larry Bird retired, Isaiah Thomas took over as coach, and the Pacers grew steadily worse.
After the 2002-2003 season ended, Larry Bird returned to the Pacers front office and wasted little time in using his own "winnowing fork." It took only a couple of weeks to fire Isaiah Thomas and begin the search for a new head coach.
