The concentration camps of the Nazis were institutions of death. In places like Ravensbruck millions of people were physically tortured and killed. Millions more had their spirits crushed from them. Some endured with great gentle strength.
In Ravensbruck an unknown prisoner wrote a prayer on a scrap of paper. The prayer was left by the body of a child who had been killed:
"O Lord, remember not only the men and women of good will, but also those of ill will. But do not remember the suffering they have inflicted on us; remember the fruits our suffering has borne -- our comradeship, our loyalty, our humility, our courage, our generosity, the greatness of heart which has grown out of all this; and when we come to judgment, let all the fruits we have borne be for their forgiveness."
Truly the powerful prayer of a bruised reed.
