Legend has it that when St. Patrick was baptized, he waded out into the river to the place where the officiating bishop was standing. The bishop leaned on a stick to steady himself against the swift current. In order to free both hands for Patrick's baptism, the bishop plunged the stick into the riverbed. Unknown to him the sharp point went through Patrick's foot. St. Patrick gave no sign of surprise or pain. The bishop continued with the ceremony and it was not until he saw blood in the water that he realized what he had done.
