As chaplain of a long-term care facility I am with older people quite a bit. Many times someone will apologize for their forgetfulness. I almost always counter with the statement that forgetfulness is a gift. If we remembered too much we would be crushed by hurts of the past.
Then, too, in our weakness (forgetfulness) we may be able to soar to heights of compensation. Like the husband who forgot his wife's birthday and quickly responded to her obvious unhappiness with, "How do you ever expect me to remember your birthday, Sweetheart, when you never look any older?" Beautiful.
