Cassie had been thinking about returning to college to finish her degree for several
months. She had completed two years but then left before her third year for what she
thought was a dream job. Several months later, she realized that her job was not what she
wanted to do in her life. In fact, Cassie strongly disliked her job. When she took the job,
she was all but promised that she would make lots of money on commission. With dollar
signs in her eyes, she withdrew from college and began working.
Her parents tried their best to hide their disappointment and remain supportive of their daughter. However, they continued to encourage her to think about returning to college. They realized that this was a decision only Cassie could make, as an adult.
Cassie discovered that her passion was helping people. When she started college, her major was social work. At the time, she felt that the courses were too much theory and not enough practical information. Cassie became discouraged and found a job at the local mall, a job she later grew to dislike. Cassie wanted to be a nurse, to care for people in the hospital.
On New Year's Day, without any fanfare, but with plenty of prayer, she quietly decided that she would take classes that would lead to a degree in nursing at a nearby college. Later that evening, she surprised her parents with her decision. Her parents were overjoyed at her decision.
Jesus teaches us the importance of serving other people. When we stop to help another it is as if we are actually helping Jesus, "'Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me."
