There are times in our lives when the veil is drawn aside and we are astounded by the clarity of things - a flock of geese silhouetted against a sunet, the pure tone of a boy's choir, a hymn that brings tears to our eyes - reminding us of what is must have been like on that morning of creation when God called everything good.
The transfiguration is a mountain-top experience in our desert days which nerves us and keeps us pressing on towards the goal. If we do not get a hint of the eternal every now and then, we go sour on life. We cannot stay on the mountain, for that is not where life is. We have to go back to the land of deep darkness if we are to see the Cross. But we are always warmed by the memory of the voice that admonished and encouraged us: "This is my beloved Son, listen to him!"
Peter remembered and was sustained in the difficult days he had to face. He writes about it in his second letter: "You will do well to pay attention to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts." (2 Peter 1:19)
