It is not uncommon for us to look for models when we are concerned about making something work. We may do this unconsciously or quite deliberately in our personal lives as we pattern ourselves after someone whom we judge to be successful.
Sometimes we wonder why the church was blessed with such phenomenal growth. Obviously Pentecost unleashed a power upon the disciples that had not been witnessed before. Yet, I am impressed in this passage with the level of trust expressed in the words, "They had everything in common." There is a pattern for success in these verses. We can sum it up in the words belief, unity, witness, grace, and sharing.
It has been my good fortune during my ministry to observe architects planning church and institutional buildings. I am impressed with the detail given on the drawing board to design something of beauty and utility. Great attention is given to such things as the condition of soil upon which a building is to be built, proper foundation, adequate support for points of stress; to say nothing of form and line. Then it is a great joy to watch contractors and builders follow the carefully designed plans as they produce functional and beautiful buildings. Behind a beautiful building are hours of careful consultation and planning.
We can do no less if we are to have a church faithfully witnessing the gospel of
Christ today.
