Brian never wanted the farm...

Brian never wanted the farm. He hated the dusty work, the long hours, and vacations squeezed in between seasons. But Brian was the only child and the logical heir to a farm that had been in his family for several generations; the farm would be his.
What Brian wanted was to be a doctor. He loved the sciences, and ever since his tonsillectomy, was enthralled by all things medical. There were two problems: the farm would be his to care for and he couldn't run a farm and be a doctor at the same time. The second problem was even more serious. As Brian was nearing college age, the farm economy plummeted and there was just no money to send Brian to school.
Brian moaned a lot about being the heir to a worthless farm. It was drilled into his very being that to sell or lose the farm would be a disgrace. Brian watched as his high school friends went off to college and he became depressed.
But Brian's fortunes were about to change in a big way. Not long after taking over the farm, a seismic crew arrived at his door. They believed that Brian's farm sat upon a huge deposit of oil. They did their work and found their suspicions were correct. In short time an oil company was drilling on Brian's land. He became incredibly rich. The first thing he did was lease his land to a neighbor and head off to college and med school.
Does that sound too good to be true? We are heirs of eternal life. Sometimes, like Brian, we don't appreciate what we have inherited. Most of the time it sounds too good to be true. But the riches of the Holy Spirit and eternal life far surpass all other riches.
