Blessings and woes on the lifestyle we live makes sense when one affirms the vital role of religion in expressing and shaping our human nature. As Huston Smith argues, in his book Why Religion Matters, the substance of the religious, and hence ethical life, are just as "real" as the physical realities we accept from the view of science. Raised by missionary parents in China, Smith personalizes his understanding of faith and the Golden Rule with these words: "We are in good hands, and in gratitude for that fact we do well to bear one another's burdens."
