Bill Cosby does a marvelous skit on fathers and Father's Day gifts. Some of that material gets worked into his book about being a father. With great humor, he builds his case for the male parent being the unappreciated one who is valued mostly for his capacity to fuel the family consumer furnace with money.
Yet, Cosby also knows what nearly all fathers feel: what we really want for our children is their happiness. We don't want a flowered necktie, another white shirt -- even with monogrammed cuffs, or a big birthday party. More than anything we simply want our children to be responsible, caring adults who contribute toward making this a more humane and just world.
Indeed, isn't that the same message that God gives us through Zechariah?
