Bethlehem, which in Hebrew means "house of bread," was indeed a small town. But
through God's grace, it was chosen to be the birthplace of the world's Savior! Phillips
Brooks captured the wonder and mystery of this choice in a beloved Christmas carol.
Brooks, a lifelong bachelor, nevertheless had close connections with the children of his
parish, Holy Trinity Church in Philadelphia. In 1868, he wrote the words to this carol as a
Christmas gift for the children of the congregation. Brooks asked organist Lewis Redner
to write music for the lyrics. No inspiration came. Finally, Christmas Eve, Redner awoke
with the tune ringing in his head. He wrote it down immediately, and a Christmas classic
was born.
