The author of Hebrews tried to lead his readers to realize who they really are, what has happened to them in their new relationship with Jesus.
Who are you really? What is your identity? How do you want to be recognized?
Joe Falls, the Detroit Free Press sportswriter, walked up to Gates Brown, one-time convict, but by the time of this conversation a Tiger slugger, and asked Gates why he wore No. 26 on his uniform. "Because they wouldn't give me my favorite number," said Brown.
"What's your favorite number?" asked Falls.
"The one I wore as a kid," said Gates.
"What was that?"
"5081782."
Perhaps Gates wanted to be recognized for what he had done, having served his time, left his former ways, and made a success of himself in baseball.
