A)The prophet...

The prophet describes himself as one who brings good tidings of healing, liberty, and salvation. At the same time he is actively involved in his mission, binding up the brokenhearted and opening prison doors. Jesus used these same words to describe his mission as he began his public ministry. The audience who heard these words must have experienced great anticipation, great joy, and great hope! We, as Christians who have received healing, freedom, and salvation, have the same mission to bring hope to those who are yet bound and afflicted. Eugene V. Debs said, "Years ago I recognized my kinship with all human beings, and I made up my mind I was not one whit better than the meanest on earth. I said then and I say now that while there is a lower class, I am of it; while there is a criminal class, I am of it; while there is a soul in prison, I am not free." Anticipation, hope, and joy are ours this Advent season, but not ours only. [Charles L. Wallis, A Treasury of Sermon IIlustrations (Nashville Abingdon Cokesbury Press, 1950), p 33.]
