Anthony Bloom in his helpful little book Beginning to Pray recalls his earlier years as a young physician. He said at that time he always felt guilty because he had a waiting room full of patients who sometimes had to wait hours until they could see him. He found himself rushing through his appointments. He had a tendency of looking beyond the patient he was consulting and of wondering how many people were waiting to see him in the next room. The result was that he found himself repeating his questions to his patients. He simply was not concentrating the way he should.
Finally, he changed his tactics. He decided that he would treat the person before him as the only one who existed. He discovered that he not only managed his time more efficiently but that he really saw the person sitting before him and heard what he or she was saying.
Jesus had the unique quality to single out hurting people, even a widow grieving over her dead son in the midst of a large crowd. He saw her and had compassion on her.
