Amos declared that he was neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, simply "a herdsman and a dresser of sycamore trees," yet in the transforming hands of the Supreme Potter, he became a vessel of great worth. As we can see by the disciples themselves, God seldom reaches into the palaces of rich religious institutions when he calls his prophets. "And Jesus saw two brothers, Simon Peter and Andrew, casting a net into the seas. And he said to them, 'Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.' " Three evangelistic leaders who have had a significant moral impact upon our 20th century have all come from very humble beginnings. Billy Sunday travelled from an Iowa orphanage to become a Chicago baseball player who was converted at a State Street mission; Billy Graham was born in a small North Carolina town and found his calling through conversion at a tent meeting when he was 17; and Martin Luther King, Jr. learned of God in a Baptist church in Atlanta, Georgia. Each of them, in their finite human condition, probably asked of the Father many times, "Why me?" Yet, each of them became a spokesperson for God who has left an indelible imprint on the religious fabric of the world.
