Although Albert Einstein did not invent the atomic bomb, his scientific genius provided theoretical grounding for the scientists who were able to do so. Einstein is remembered for his contribution to the field of physics, but he also was a pacifist who championed the cause of international peace. In 1945, following WW2, he addressed a gathering of scientists in New York City at the Fifth Nobel Anniversary dinner. Einstein exhorted his listeners to assume the task of leading world powers, especially political leaders, into a new attitude for achieving international cooperation. Their knowledge of the capacity of one nation to destroy another through greed, hate and discord comes with a responsibility to help the world rethink the process for establishing peace. He reminded them that the war may be won, but true peace had not been achieved; they must continue toward that goal. -- Kelly
