Allowances for children have often been hotly debated items, usually between parents and their own children.
I wonder if the disciples were asking for a larger allowance when they asked for an increase in faith. The answer about mustard seeds or the parable of the servant must have sounded a lot like parents' answers when they've been asked for that allowance increase.
What kid has not asked for a raise in allowance, and been told that what she/he does in housework, homework, and personal care are not items to be rewarded, but expectations of family membership.
Was Jesus saying that the disciples' obedience was expected and would not be rewarded with increased faith? It seems that obedience isn't to be singled out for reward but is part of being members of God's family.
