Of all the things Paul...

Of all the things Paul chose to say about love in this great chapter, perhaps none is more important than the affirmation, "Love never fails." Leslie Weatherhead told a story about a soldier in World War II who asked his officer for permission to go out into "no man's land" to retrieve one of his buddies, who lay grievously wounded. The officer replied, "You can go, but it won't be worth it. Your friend might already be dead, and you will possibly lose your own life in enemy gunfire."
But the young soldier went. Somehow he managed to reach his friend, hoist him to his shoulder, and bring him back to the trench. In the process, a bullet found its mark in the rescuer. As they tumbled into the trench, the officer said, "I told you it wouldn't be worth it. Your friend is dead and you are mortally wounded."
The response was without a moment's hesitation: "It was worth it, sir, because when I got to my buddy, he was still alive and he said, 'I knew you would come.' " Real love, like the love of Jesus Christ, never lets us down.
