Alcoholism tends to run in some families. That means that if alcoholism runs in your family, and if you choose to ignore that threat and just go on with your life, there is a very good chance that you yourself will become an alcoholic. It is only when we face up to our family histories and see those forces from the past for what they are that we can then deal with those problems and overcome them. The passage suggests that as we learn from the mistakes of the past, we have the opportunity to move forward in the way that God wants us to go. -- Bowen
