It was said again recently by members of a confirmation class. I asked, "What are the ten commandments?" The constant answer, "Rules, laws, the do nots." It took the class quite awhile to come around to a gracious, protective and caring reason as to the positive side of the Law. We were, after all, made to live in society, in community. There had to be a way of ordering, structuring, to insure every person's freedom. Luther's Catechism is especially helpful in highlighting the positive side of the Law. Not only does there appear a prohibition with regard to a law but also there is a summons to action -- for our neighbor's sake -- in the commands.
