I don't know the man's name. It was one of those anonymous conversations you sometimes have on an airplane. I was returning from a seminary internship in Tokyo. He was a Japanese chemistry professor and was serving on a commission of the United Nations. In our conversation, he asked about my work. He volunteered his religious preference as Buddhist. What I remember most was his comment, "But you Christians give much good service to people." It was and is quite a tribute to have such an outsider give that assessment and evaluation of the faithful. The faith is a stumbling block still to intelligence, often to other cultures and religions. The proclamation made by the church will always seem to be a stumbling block to both Christians and nonChristians. Service in love helps to "flesh in" the proclamation; indeed, it is the incarnation of the proclamation.
