After a long road trip...

After a long road trip, there is nothing so inviting as a motel sign: V-A-C-A-N-C-Y! This is a sign that we read as hospitality. A clean room. A soft bed. An opportunity to be refreshed for the next day.
If an old friend comes to town, do we invite her or him to break bread with us? Not often. It is really easy to practice hospitality toward others. Do we seldom take the opportunity to reach out to others? Are we shy? Are we reticent to share our resources? Or do we want to be Christian at home alone with our possessions?
Christ was always ready to join others for a meal. Jesus was very open to hospitality. He joined the Pharisees to discuss who is acceptable in the Kingdom. It was not exactly a business meal but more like a summit conference. Jesus was a traveling evangelist, loved by people over whom the Pharisees had authority.
A sinner came during dinner and placed expensive ointment on his feet and admitted transgressions. She used the opportunity to honor Christ with hospitality. At the same time, she cleansed her soul. She took a risk because touching the feet had sexual overtones. Jesus knew her intentions were honorable and blessed her.
