After Jesus ascended into heaven, the remaining eleven disciples got down to business. Their first real administrative decision involved selecting a replacement for Judas Iscariot. The disciples were frequently referred to as "The Twelve." Jacob had twelve sons, resulting in twelve tribes of Israel.
Twelve was a number of divine identity, a number that had been given crucial new importance by Jesus in choosing the disciples. When Jesus fed the 5,000, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftovers afterward. On the night in which Jesus was betrayed, he said that he could call for twelve legions of angels.
Matthias was a true seeker whose quest had probably led him to John the Baptist and then to Jesus. Matthias had been present at the ascension. The eleven prayed, asking for God's guidance and then they cast lots, with the lot falling on Matthias. In casting lots the disciples were following historic tradition, reverently pursuing God's guidance.
