At a Pastor-Parish Relations meeting the committee was filling out a church profile. They were to choose from a list of qualities the church valued in a pastor: dynamic, caring, mission-minded, mature, enabler, assertive, vigorous, passive, evangelical, loving, able to develop leaders, outgoing, relevant, and/or others to be named.
The committee could not focus on just one or two of these qualities. Yet they could not mark them all. How could a pastor be aggressive and passive at once? They decided finally their answer should be "some of each at the proper time." An ideal pastor, they felt, should have the gift of discernment, along with ability to concentrate on feelings, being able to invest himself or herself emotionally and empathetically until effective communication occurs. In other words, "become all things" to all for whom he/she has responsibility as a pastor.
