In 1993, Paul Rivers was convicted of second degree robbery for snatching a bag filled with $337 from someone operating an espresso stand. He is spending the rest of his life in prison because of that act. This felony conviction came under Washington state's new "three strikes, and you're out" law. That law demands life imprisonment without parole for any criminals who have committed more than three felonies. Paul Rivers had prior convictions for attempted robbery (1985), second degree robbery (1987), and second degree assault (1990).
