In the 1810 Mexican War of Independence, Guanajuato was the first major city that
Mexicans freed. Spanish troops eventually retook the city and retaliated with the
infamous "Lottery of Death," in which the names of citizens were randomly chosen,
determining who would then be tortured and hanged.
The terror that Guanajuato's citizens experienced while waiting for names to be drawn is like the dread and anxiety that each of Jesus' disciples expresses. Someone will betray him. Who is it? Is it I?
