For you
Children's sermon
Object:
canned food
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me. (vv. 35-36)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) How many of you have seen one of these before? (show can of food; allow answers) Where have you seen this before? (allow answers) Your parents probably buy canned food like this at the grocery store and take it home to use when they cook dinner.
Sometimes you might see canned food at church, too, but not for cooking. Sometimes we collect canned food at church so that we can donate it. Does anyone know where you would donate canned food? (allow answers) We donate cans to local food pantries. Food pantries are places where people who can't afford groceries can go to get food to feed themselves and their families.
Why do you think we collect food for food pantries at church? (allow answers) Actually, there is a very good reason. Not only do we do it because it shows God's love for our community but part of the gospel tells us specifically that we should feed those who are hungry. We read that part of the gospel today in church. Jesus tells us that when we do something good for a stranger -- when we give them food, or even when we give them clothing or shelter or friendship -- it is like we are doing that thing for Jesus himself. Some people think of it as Jesus in disguise. It's almost like Jesus is going undercover to see how well we are following his commandment to love one another.
Next time you see canned food, think of Jesus as someone who is hungry or starving. If Jesus were hungry, would you give him food? Of course! So why should we treat real hungry people any differently? It doesn't matter if we know them or not -- everyone deserves to have enough food to eat. Amen.
