In whose name?
Children's sermon
Object:
a Bible with a marker at Matthew 28:19
Good morning! Once when Saint Paul was at Ephesus, he met
some men who thought they had been baptized. They claimed to be
disciples of Jesus, but when Paul asked them about their baptism,
it turned out that they had never even heard of the Holy Spirit,
so there was no way they could have had a valid baptism. Jesus
himself tells us in whose name we are to be baptized. Look with
me here in the Bible. Let me read this part to you. It says ...
(read Matthew 28:19 from the Bible). So would you agree with me,
after hearing this, that Jesus tells us to be baptized in the
name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit? (Let them
answer.)
Okay, so to be really baptized, we have to be baptized in
the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Is that
the way we baptize people in our church? (Let them answer.) Yes,
of course it is. We baptize that way because Jesus told us to,
and we should do what he tells us to, shouldn't we? (Let them
answer.) Of course we should and we do! If we do it the way he
told us to, we know that we are baptizing correctly. Let's thank
Jesus for blessing us with baptism.
Dear Jesus: We thank you for telling us in whose name we should
baptize. We will always baptize in the name of the Father and the
Son and the Holy Spirit, just as you told us to. Amen.
