Who is Jesus?
Children's sermon
Object:
a picture of Jesus
Who is this? (Let them answer.) We all know who this is. We
have never seen Jesus, but we know that Jesus is God's son. We
know that Jesus is the Messiah -- the Christ. Jesus is our
Savior. We know who Jesus is and what he did. We know he was born
in Bethlehem and that he lived a good life and taught people many
stories and lessons about life and God. We know that Jesus healed
people. We know he preached some powerful sermons. We also know
that he died on the cross, was buried, and rose again from the
dead. We know that he is with us even now -- even though we
cannot see him.
In the days of the Bible, Jesus had twelve followers. One day he asked them what people were saying about him and who he might be. They answered, "Some say that you are John the Baptist. Other people say that you are Elijah. Still other people say that you are Jeremiah or one of the prophets who lived long ago."
Then Jesus asked his disciples, "Who do you say that I am?" They might have said, "You are a great teacher." Jesus was a great teacher, but he was more than that. They might have said, "You are a wonderful preacher," and they would have been right. Jesus was a powerful preacher. They might have said, "You are a miracle worker." They would have been correct because Jesus did many miracles and signs. They could have answered Jesus, "You are a healer," because Jesus healed many people of disease and disability. But the disciples didn't say any of this. Does anybody know what the disciples said when Jesus asked them who he was? (Let them answer.) They said, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."
Jesus was many things: a great teacher, wonderful preacher, miracle worker, and healer. If Jesus were just these things, he wouldn't be with us today. If Jesus were just a great teacher, wonderful preacher, miracle worker, and healer, that would have been fine. But Jesus was so much more. Jesus was and is today our Savior, the Son of God, our Lord. He alone can give us the gift of heaven because he is God's Messiah. He died and rose again. Great teachers, wonderful preachers, miracle workers, and healers cannot do that. Jesus, the Messiah, did!
Dear Lord Jesus: Thank you for dying and rising for us. Amen.
