Where is he?
Children's sermon
Object:
a basket, a drawer, a bag, and a box
This will be a sign for you; you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth
and lying in a manger. (v. 12)
Good evening, boys and girls. How many of you have ever met a shepherd? (let them answer) No one here has ever visited a shepherd? What do shepherds do? (let them answer) That's right, they take care of sheep and sometimes goats. Where do they do this kind of work? (let them answer) That's right, out in fields where there is a lot of grass for the sheep to eat. The reason you don't see many shepherds today is because we use fences and the sheep eat the grass inside the fences. Cowboys were a lot like shepherds but they took care of cows.
One night, the shepherds were out in the fields taking care of their sheep. They probably took turns sleeping. An angel came to visit them and told them that something very exciting was going to happen in Bethlehem. It was pretty exciting in the fields. A whole group of angels showed up and sang and sang. It was beautiful and the shepherds were thrilled to be at their concert. Then all of a sudden, the angels left. The disciples remembered the directions that the first angel had spoken and decided that they should get into Bethlehem as fast as they could get there.
What was it they were supposed to look for in Bethlehem? (let them answer) A baby, but where were they going to find this baby? One of the shepherds saw a basket and called to the other shepherds to look inside the basket. (look inside the basket and then show the children it is empty) "No baby in there," they said. Another one spotted a drawer that used to be filled with clothes. They ran to the drawer and looked in it. (look in the drawer) No baby! What did the angels say? They couldn't remember, it was such a great concert! Maybe the angel said they would find the child in a bag or a box? (look around and find the bag and box and look through them in a frantic way) One of the shepherds said, "I think we should ask someone else. Maybe the angels told others?"
The shepherds were so disappointed. The angel told them exactly where to look but, after everything happened with the great choir of angels and the rush to Bethlehem, they had forgotten where. I wonder what would have happened if they had seen you, all the children of our church. If one of the shepherds asked you where to find the Savior, would you be able to tell them? (let them answer)
What building would they find Jesus the Savior in? (let them answer) And what did Jesus sleep in? (let them answer) And what was he wrapped up in? (let them answer) That's right, he was born in a stable, he slept in a manger, and he was wrapped in clean swaddling cloths.
I think you would have been a big help to the shepherds the night that Jesus was born. Amen.
