What is prayer?
Children's Activity
Object:
For such a simple thing, prayer is really intimidating for some people. Maybe we are intimidated at the thought of having a conversation with "The Lord And Master Of The Universe." What could we possibly have to say that would matter to him? Maybe the difficulty with prayer is that we cannot see God. It's hard to have a conversation when you feel like you are talking to yourself.
The main thing for all of us to understand is that prayer is important, necessary, and not supposed to be that hard. Below I have listed five different kinds of prayer. Share these examples with your children and talk about the fact that prayer is really nothing more complicated than having a conversation with a friend.
1) Praise: In this prayer we simply tell God how wonderful we think he is.
2) Petition: This is the kind of prayer when we ask God for something: help, healing, guidance, patience, etc.
3) Confession: This is when we tell God what we've done wrong and ask for his forgiveness.
4) Intercession: These are the prayers we say when we want God to help others.
5) Thanksgiving: This prayer is what we say when we appreciate something God has done.
Our prayers can contain any, all, or none of the above ideas. Your prayers are your conversations with God, and you can talk with him about anything you like. Just make sure you do talk to him. He's interested in what you have to say!
