We need power
Children's sermon
Object:
any electrical device with a long extension cord
Good morning! What is this thing I have here with me today?
(Let them answer.) Yes, that's right. Now if I want this to
_____________ (do whatever the device is supposed to do), all I
have to do is turn on this switch. But when I turn on the switch,
nothing happens. Why is that? Why doesn't it work? (Let them
answer.) Yes, of course. It needs power. It won't work unless it
is plugged in. Somebody take the cord and plug it in for me. (Let
one of them plug in the cord.) Okay, now when we turn on the
switch, it works. (Turn it on and show them that it works.)
You know we Christians are a lot like this device. If we
don't receive power from God, we can't really do any of the
things He wants us to do. The Bible tells us that we receive that
power when the Holy Spirit comes to us. When we are baptized, the
Holy Spirit comes to us and continues to come to us every time we
read or hear the word of God. In church today, we read the word
of God and in the sermon I talk about the word of God. When that
happens, the Holy Spirit comes to everyone and gives them power
to do what God wants them to do. It's like getting plugged into a
source of power, just like we plugged in the cord to give this
device power. Let's thank God for giving us the power to do what
He wants us to do.
Dear Father in Heaven: We thank You for sending the Holy Spirit
to us through Your Holy Word. We know that we need the power that
the Spirit gives us if we are to do the things You want us to do.
Please continue to give us this power. Amen.
