We are chosen
Children's sermon
Object:
name tags, a pen or marker, a volunteer
... including yourselves who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. (v. 6)
Good morning, boys and girls. This is the fourth Sunday in Advent and it is only a couple of days before Christmas. I know you are excited about Christmas and so am I, but it is still a couple of days before it happens.
Today, I would like to have my volunteer, who is quite a good writer, to write your names on this piece of paper that is sticky on the back. (have the volunteer write each person's name on a name tag and then put it on his or her blouse or shirt) Isn't it wonderful that we each have a name? If we didn't have names, I would have to point at you or touch you on the arm so that you would know that I wanted to talk to you. Names are a really good thing for all of us.
If you keep your name tag on today, people will greet you by your name instead of just saying, "Good morning" or "Have a nice day." They will use your name and use it often.
Do you think God knows each of us by name? (let them answer) Do you think that God just knows you because you live in a white house or because he knows your parents' names? (let them answer) Have you ever heard God say, "Hey, you"? The Bible tells us that shepherds know the names of their sheep. If shepherds know their sheep by name, then I am very sure that God knows you by your name.
God is even closer to you than knowing your name. God has chosen you to be one of his disciples. The Bible tells us that God has called us. That means that God has chosen us. It is really good to be chosen. When someone chooses you to be on their team or chooses you to do something special in school, it means that you are very special.
The Bible tells us that Jesus has called us or chosen us to be his disciples, which means we are on Jesus' team and we have something special to do.
I know that God knows your name, but why don't you wear your name tag for the rest of today and see how many other people know you also by your name? It will make you feel special. Amen.
