A Voice From A Cloud
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers: Three disciples heard a voice from a cloud. The
voice said, "This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well
pleased; listen to him!" Try one or a number of the following
suggestions, related to this text. Your direction depends on the
interest of your class, the age of your students, and the
availability of your sanctuary or tape ministry.
Tell the story of today's lesson. Have your class recite the words God spoke about Jesus. Take your class to your sanctuary. Have someone turn on the pulpit microphone. Give each student the opportunity to stand at the mike and recite the statement God made. You should be the first to speak in the microphone, so the students know what to expect. Each student will hear his voice over the loudspeaker, as if God were speaking it. As students take turns, have the listeners pretend they are the disciples, hearing God's voice. If your class is old enough to read, suggest to the pastor that the class share in reading this passage during the morning service scripture reading. If this is an option, take time during the class period to divide the reading among the students and rehearse it. A third option is this: use a cassette recorder to record each student reciting the statement during class time. Play the entire tape back so that all students can hear their voices. If your church has a tape ministry, offer this tape as an "extra" with the weekly church service. If you do this, allow time at the beginning of the tape for the students to introduce themselves, and give the names of their parents. This is helpful if the tape goes to older persons. As the class teacher, you should begin the tape with an introduction, explaining that this is Transfiguration Sunday and the text relates to it.
Parents: Your child participated in one or more scripture- reading activities. Suggest that your child read Matthew 17:1-9 into a cassette recorder. You might send it to a grandparent or family member living in another city. If your child cannot read, help him with it, read part of it and suggest he memorize, "This is my Son the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!"
